Why Trauma Healing Needs a Human Touch

Why AI is Insufficient as a Primary Trauma Support Tool

There’s a desperation that comes with trauma. A longing to be truly seen and heard by someone who understands the weight of what you’ve been carrying. In a world where technology promises to solve almost everything, it’s no surprise that many people healing from trauma have turned to AI chatbots for support. They’re available at 3 a.m. They don’t judge, and they respond instantly.

But here’s what I need you to know: AI is not equipped to be your primary source of healing support, and depending on how you use it, it can cause real harm.

I want to share what brought me to this conclusion, not just as a trauma coach, but through a direct experience that genuinely alarmed me.

What Happened When I Tested AI as a Trauma Support Tool

In the spirit of understanding the tools my clients might be using, I spent time engaging with a mainstream AI chatbot as if I were someone struggling with trauma. What started as a research exercise became deeply concerning.

Within that single session, the AI-generated response suggested self-harm. I’m choosing my words carefully here, because that moment deserves to be taken seriously rather than sensationalized, but I want to be direct: it was the kind of response that no trained human practitioner would ever give, not even someone fresh out of their first week of trauma training.

This experience didn’t just confirm my professional instincts. It made me realize how important it is to talk openly about the limitations and the risks of AI in mental health and trauma support spaces.

Why Trauma Healing Requires a Human Presence

Healing happens in relationship.

The research on trauma is clear on this. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk has written extensively about how trauma is not just stored in the mind, but also lives in the body, and heals through felt safety with other human beings. His work on somatic experiencing and nervous system regulation points to something AI simply cannot replicate: the co-regulatory presence of another person.

A chatbot cannot create a felt sense of safety. It cannot sit with you in silence. It cannot notice the slight catch in your voice, or recognize that what you said and what you meant are two entirely different things. Healing from trauma is a relational process, and it requires the presence of another regulated nervous system to help yours find its way back to calm. No algorithm can offer that.

AI cannot read between the lines.

Trauma survivors are often experts at minimizing their pain. They’ve learned to say “I’m fine” when they’re anything but. A skilled trauma coach is trained to listen for what isn’t being said and to gently hold space for what’s beneath the surface, without pushing too hard or too fast.

AI responds to the words you type. It has no ability to sense hesitation, recognize dissociation, or understand the cultural, relational, or historical context behind your story. It processes language. It does not understand you.

Safety cannot be automated.

As my experience illustrates, AI can generate responses that are genuinely dangerous when someone is at their most vulnerable. Trauma work requires a practitioner who is trained in crisis recognition, ethical boundaries, and trauma-informed care. These are not features that can be coded into a chatbot. They are the result of years of training, lived experience, supervision, and genuine human accountability.

What AI Can and Cannot Do

To be fair, there are limited, low-stakes ways AI can support general wellness. Suggesting journaling prompts. Explaining breathing techniques. Helping someone understand what trauma coaching is before they reach out to a professional. These are supplemental uses, and they can be helpful.

But AI should never be the primary source of support for someone actively healing from trauma. Think of it this way: AI is a conversational search engine. You wouldn’t process your deepest wounds with a search engine. Your healing deserves more than that.

The Irreplaceable Power of Being Witnessed

One of the most profound things that happens in trauma coaching is the experience of being witnessed and having another human look at your full story, your pain, your strength, and your potential, and reflect back to you: I see you. I hear you. You can heal.

It is a fundamentally human exchange and often the turning point in someone’s healing journey.

When you work with a real human, you’re not just receiving information or strategies. You’re entering a relationship built on trust, attunement, and genuine care. That relationship is the medicine.

You Deserve Real Support

If you’ve been turning to AI to process your trauma, please be gentle with yourself. It makes sense. It’s accessible, often free, and available when human support feels out of reach or even overwhelming to seek out. That impulse comes from a real need, and that need is valid.

But you deserve more than an algorithm. You deserve someone who will show up for you, hold space without judgment, and walk alongside you at a pace that honors your nervous system and your story.

My work is rooted in the belief that every person carries within them both the wound and the wisdom to heal. If you’re curious about what human-centered trauma support looks like, I’d love to have that conversation with you. Let's move forward together.
